Sony undoubtedly holds a distinguished reputation as a premier manufacturer of products. The company has established itself as a significant player in the industry, having developed one of the most successful console series observed in the past twenty years.
The DualSense controllers, PlayStation handheld devices, and the overall hardware ecosystem developed over the years have been remarkable. Therefore, as I prepared to evaluate the Inzone H9 wireless noise-canceling headset, priced at over, I was optimistic. This headset represents a fusion of the PS5 design and ecosystem, along with Sony’s renowned expertise in audio and noise cancellation. I anticipated that it would prove to be an exceptional product, likely earning a spot on our list of the best PC gaming headsets and more.
This company possesses a remarkable audio division within its brand, as previously noted. By enlisting some of those skilled engineers, providing them with a design intellectual property and a modest budget, and integrating a high-quality microphone into the core of a device such as the Sony WH1000XM5 or its earlier models, they would undoubtedly achieve significant success.
Is that truly the situation? Does the Sony Inzone H9 wireless noise-cancelling gaming headset represent a rebranded version of the WH1000XM5s tailored for the PS5? The answer is no, not exactly. While they are costly, aesthetically pleasing, and thoughtfully crafted, the audio quality does not fully justify the premium price.
A brief glance at the Inzone H9 Wireless will undoubtedly captivate your attention, especially if you are deeply integrated into the Sony PS5 ecosystem and opt for the white variant of this remarkable device. Its design is exceptionally sleek, featuring the familiar sandblasted white plastic that has become synonymous with Sony products, complemented by a striking contrast of glossy black plastic interspersed with matte accents. Additionally, the ear-cups prominently display the unmistakable Sony branding.
The microphone stands out for its remarkable cleanliness, complemented by its swivel mechanism. Additionally, the ergonomic features that Sony has incorporated into the Inzone H9 are commendable. The earcups are generously sized, designed to encompass the entire ear, reminiscent of the headsets used by helicopter pilots. While they may not be the most suitable choice for casual wear in public, they do contribute to an elegant appearance and provide exceptional comfort.
The headband has seen significant enhancements compared to the less expensive Inzone H5 wireless model, and the earcups now boast a softer faux leather covering, although the texture may come across as somewhat “crisp,” which is unusual for a headset. Additionally, the padding is considerably more luxurious than that of its lower-priced counterparts. While it may not qualify as memory foam—nor is that term used in Sony’s promotional content—it remains comfortable for extended periods of use, which is the key consideration in this context.
The Inzone H9, in addition to its physical attributes, offers only two connection standards: Bluetooth 5.0 and a conventional Wireless 2.4 GHz dongle. In contrast to the Inzone H5, the H9 lacks an analog connection; however, it does include USB-C connectivity.
The headset is equipped with several integrated buttons, which include controls for power, Bluetooth connectivity, adjustments for game and chat volume, a volume wheel, and a noise-canceling button. These features enable users to switch between various presets seamlessly.
The primary factor that determines the success or failure of a gaming headset is the quality of its audio output. Regardless of any additional features, noise-canceling capabilities, or advanced spatial audio technologies that may be highlighted in its promotional materials, if the headset fails to deliver superior audio performance relative to its competitors within the same price range, it is likely to face significant criticism.
Sony’s Inzone H9 wireless noise-cancelling headset presents some disappointing audio performance. Unfortunately, it utilizes the same drivers as the significantly less expensive Inzone H5 wireless gaming headset, featuring an identical frequency response of 5 Hz to 20 kHz. Additionally, the equalization tuning appears to be similarly flawed from the outset. While the bass is strong, it lacks definition and clarity, resulting in a muted and muffled sound. The midrange suffers from a deficiency in higher frequencies, and the overall treble, which should enhance clarity, is notably absent. This is particularly disheartening considering the premium price point of the headset.
I utilized the Inzone H9 wireless headset for several weeks, evaluating its performance against various budget-friendly and premium alternatives. Unfortunately, it does not stand out when compared to products from brands such as Audiotechnica, Corsair, and Razer. This is disappointing, particularly given Sony’s esteemed reputation in the audio industry. While the music quality is satisfactory, the headset overall can only be described as average. It provides a reasonable gaming experience, but when investing a significant amount in a gaming headset, one expects more than just mediocrity.
We then arrive at the microphone. In this instance, it differs significantly from models such as the Inzone H5; specifically, it exhibits a more muffled and less distinct sound quality. When compared to products like Corsair’s HS80 or HyperX’s Cloud Alpha, which excel in this aspect, the performance here is rather disappointing.
The noise-cancelling feature serves as a significant advantage. It is effective and robust, successfully minimizing background hums, vibrations, and sounds such as the whir of a computer fan or the noise from a washer-dryer. However, it does not eliminate all external sounds. For instance, if someone is playing loud music in an adjacent room or calling your name, those sounds will still be audible. Additionally, there are limited options for active noise-cancelling gaming headsets within this price range, as managing ambient noise in a gaming setting is generally more straightforward than in external environments. Nevertheless, the standout technology is, somewhat ironically, the ambient sound mode. This feature adds a pleasant dimension, allowing the Inzone H9 wireless headset to deliver a remarkably open-backed audio experience.
Connectivity is satisfactory. In the current technological landscape, 2.4GHz wireless, Bluetooth, and USB-C are adequate, and the included USB dongle features a switch that allows users to toggle between PS5 and PC modes based on the device being connected. I observed that the battery life is commendable; while Sony claims up to 32 hours of playback with Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) disabled, my experience suggests it may not quite reach that duration. However, it certainly retains its charge sufficiently to avoid the need for recharging every couple of days. Additionally, the quick charge capability via USB-C provides an hour of gameplay after just 10 minutes of charging.
The Inzone hub software suite from Sony is notably sophisticated and remarkably user-friendly, which is advantageous as it allows for adjustments to the suboptimal factory equalizer settings. However, it is unfortunate that the limitations imposed by the audio drivers remain a drawback.
The Sony Inzone H9 is not an inferior headset at its core. When evaluated on its own, it provides a satisfactory experience. Acquiring this headset will likely yield a reasonable level of enjoyment. However, the primary motivation for purchasing this headset appears to be the desire for the “Sony” brand prestige and the aesthetic compatibility with the PS5 DualSense controller. In this context, I find it challenging to endorse this product. The audio quality falls short when compared to its competitors, as well as to Sony’s own more affordable Inzone models, which presents a significant concern.
The design is impressive, aligning well with the aesthetics of the latest generation consoles, and it will undoubtedly enhance the overall appearance of your setup.
